The Mission of a Man

No Menial Jobs, Only Menial Attitudes

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

Colossians 3:23–24

----------

“I hate my job.” If you have ever said that, you are not alone. Many people feel stuck in a job or work environment that they wish they could change or escape.

When Paul wrote these words about “working heartily,” he was not writing to a 24 year old making just over minimum wage trying to pay off his student loans.  He was not addressing a 46 year old who is frustrated that he can’t work remotely.  You may be surprised to find out that Paul was writing to a group of slaves, who had become Christians in the church of Colossae.  These believers had no job options.  They couldn’t quit, change careers, take time off to reinvent themselves or even ask for a raise.

If your job satisfaction is dependent upon your circumstances, your pay, benefits, or responsibilities, you may spend your entire career unhappy, unsatisfied, and unsettled.  Constantly waiting for the dream job, perfect boss, ultimate work-life balance, or deeply meaningful vocation may make you more miserable than a first century slave.

More important than what you do is who you do it for.  As Christian men, we work not for human bosses, but for the Lord Christ.  We do not work for earthly benefits, but heavenly rewards.  Every job we take is ultimately driven by a desire to bring honor and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Additionally, as husbands and fathers, we are not just working for ourselves, but for our wives, our children, and for those we can bless and provide for through the income we earn.  We are working so that our employers, employees, and customers can see Christ in our attitude and work ethic.

“There are no menial jobs, only menial attitudes. We are to devote our work and callings to Christ and make it our business to glorify Him.” — John Chrysostom
