Intentional Leadership

A Self-Diagnosis For Spiritual Readiness

“For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.”

Titus 1:7–9

----------

If you are to be a leader, particularly in your own home, you must be prepared to give instruction and rebuke bad thinking and behavior with clarity and conviction.  In this passage, Paul clearly hinges a spiritual leader’s (overseer) spiritual authority to his personal credibility with the words, “so that he may be able to”.  If you want to be a man who can teach and correct others with confidence, you must be a man who has developed his credibility through his integrity and character.

Do a self-diagnosis with your own personal spiritual readiness-

  • Am I above reproach?
  • Am I arrogant?
  • Am I quick tempered?
  • Am I a drunkard?
  • Am I violent?
  • Am I greedy?
  • Am I hospitable?
  • Am I a lover of good?
  • Am I self-controlled?
  • Am I upright?
  • Am I holy?
  • Am I disciplined?
  • Am I holding firmly to the Word of God?

How are you feeling right about now?  If that self-diagnosis felt like a couple of punches to the stomach, don’t quit in shame or shrug your shoulders and say, “I guess I can’t be a leader.” That is not the way a man responds to exhortation.  Instead, begin to address the areas of your life so that you can become that man that Paul is describing in Titus 1.

Whether or not one day your church ever calls on you to be an overseer, your family is counting on you to be that man today.

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?

Take the challenge, step up to the task, and watch God transform your life, your relationships and your legacy over the next 75 days in God’s Word.
