The Mission That Is Bigger Than The Moon

 

“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Zig Ziglar is known for saying, "If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time." He’s got a point. Whatever you aim your life, thoughts, attention, and resources towards is most likely what you are going to hit.  If you think about money problems, political divisions, trivial distractions, or anxious dead ends, you will probably find yourself up to your neck in those very things. As Jesus says plainly and truthfully in the next verse, “each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Of all the things that you can pursue in this life, Jesus zeroes in on the bullseye with this profound instruction- “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.”  That’s the top priority, the numero uno, the mission, vision, and values of every believer wrapped up in one solitary statement. 

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy gave a speech entitled, “We Choose To Go To The Moon”. In that speech, Kennedy explained, “We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.“ This grandiose vision captured the imagination of a nation, and galvanized the efforts of many of the best and brightest to achieve what few thought possible. As awe inspiring as Kennedy’s “We Choose To Go To The Moon” speech may be, it cannot even begin to hold a candle to the vision that Jesus Christ laid out over two millennia ago.

“We Choose To Build The Kingdom Of God On Earth” There it is, a vision so grand, so bold, so beautifully inspiring that it ought to capture our hearts' imagination.  We choose to build the Kingdom of God in our lifetime, not because it is easy, but because it is hard, and because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one that we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win for the glory of King Jesus.
