FAITH THAT DOESN'T FIT IN A BOX

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

Mark 12:30

----------

“Men are like waffles, women are like spaghetti.” That’s what authors Bill and Pam Farrel have been telling us since their book was published in 2001. The big idea is this: men tend to compartmentalize things into little boxes like the squares in a waffle, while women manage to keep their emotions, memories, and thoughts constantly intermingled like a plate of spaghetti.  One analogy is not better than the other, and both are helpful or harmful in their own ways.

Consider a man’s ability to compartmentalize- When on a field of battle, running into a burning building, or competing in a tournament, the ability to focus solely on the task at hand is an essential skill both for survival and success.  If Carlos Alcaraz is thinking about a conflict with his sister and the plans for the new kitchen tile while trying to play world class tennis at Wimbledon, it is unlikely he will have the focus to be successful.  The ability to thrive in his “tennis box” while on the tennis court is mission critical to Alcarez’ tennis success.

The problem is when men put God in a box.  When men treat God like a part of their lives, day of the week, hour of the day, or line item on the budget they get themselves in trouble.  If you compartmentalize your relationship with God, you essentially have made God a subject to your will, your authority, and your rule.  “God box Christians” can raise their hands in worship on Sunday morning, and then raise their hands in anger against their wives on Sunday night.  It’s a dis-integrated faith, and a dis-integrated faith will produce a disintegrated life, marriage, family, and future.

When Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength,” He was repeating the foundational tenet of the Jewish faith.  It represented a completely integrated relationship with God that extended into every aspect of a man’s life and being.

Think about it this way… if a man is like a waffle, then God cannot be one box among many in his life.  No, instead, God must be like syrup… filling every box with His sweet presence.  Your life is meant to be filled to the brim with the presence and power of God in every area of your life and every aspect of your being.

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
