CHUCK COLSON: HOW GOD CHISELED THE “HATCHET MAN

Once known as President Nixon’s “hatchet man,” Chuck Colson was a powerful political figure at the center of the Watergate scandal. In 1974, his fall from grace became national news when he was convicted of obstruction of justice and sent to federal prison.

But Colson’s prison sentence marked the beginning of a far greater story—one of redemption. Just before serving time, he surrendered his life to Christ, a decision many doubted at first. Yet his repentance proved real. While in prison, Colson embraced humility, studied the Bible, and let God reshape him.

After his release, he founded Prison Fellowship, which would become the world’s largest prison ministry. He authored several books, including “How Now Shall We Live?” For the rest of his life, Colson served the very people society had forgotten—prisoners—and boldly spoke of God’s grace.

The real legacy of my life was my biggest failure — that I was an ex-convict. But that’s where God found me and used me.”

Chuck Colson’s life reminds us that no failure is too great for God to redeem—and some- times, it’s the breaking that makes the man. This is at the heart of Theodore Roosevelt’s words in his poem, The Man in the Arena, “who errs, who comes short again and again…” Failure is a necessary step for true growth, and the successful do not fear failure, they conquer it.
