PARENTS: Your Kids' Busy Calendar Is Killing Them

“I feel like I am a counselor disguised as a piano instructor.” My wife expressed this sentiment many times over the years as she would regularly have kids burst into tears and open up about their fears, depression, anxiety and burn out after being shuttled from one activity to the next. While every parent is well meaning in trying to give their kids great opportunities, expose them to new learning, and make them as well- rounded as they can be, the truth is that their “helping” is often hurting them more than doing good.
A 2023 survey found that 72% of parents report feeling stressed by their family's packed sched- ule, and 63% say they struggle to find time for meaningful family activities (American Family Survey). It’s not just the parents who are stressed though; the children are feeling it as well.
A research study published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies found that children from families with consistently busy schedules were more likely to exhibit symptoms of stress, anxiety, and behavioral issues. The lack of quality time spent with parents was correlated with an increase in emotional and behavioral problems in children.
The study concluded, "Children who perceive their parents as too busy may internalize a sense of unimportance, leading to emotional distress, lower self-esteem, and difficulty managing stress."
While many parents run their children ragged to make sure they don’t “fall behind” and have a great “resume for college,” more and more parents are choosing to invest in emotional health by stepping off the crazy train.
