Lifelong Perseverance and Spiritual Progress

We’re Talkin’ ‘Bout Practice!

“Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

1 Timothy 4:15–16

----------

“We're sitting here, and I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we're in here talking about practice. I mean, listen, we're talking about practice. Not a game! Not a game! Not a game! We're talking about practice. Not a game; not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last, not the game, we're talking about practice, man. I mean, how silly is that? We're talking about practice. I know I'm supposed to be there, I know I'm supposed to lead by example, I know that. And I'm not shoving it aside like it don't mean anything. I know it's important. I do. I honestly do. But we're talking about practice, man. What are we talking about? Practice? We're talking about practice, man! We're talking about practice! We're talking about practice... We ain't talking about the game! We're talking about practice, man!” Allen Iverson (former NBA star)

This Iverson post game rant about practice is one of the greatest reminders of the importance of a Christian man putting his faith into practice every single day.  As we come to the end of the IMPACT Hard 75 Day Challenge, it is important to remember that the whole purpose of this challenge is to build habits that we will take with us for the rest of our lives.  Look at these challenges from the Apostle Paul to his protege Timothy, and think through how you can apply what you have learned over the past 73 days to your life moving forward.

“Practice these things, immerse yourself in them…”
Q. What are the spiritual disciplines you want to continue to practice moving forward?
Q. What is the difference between “dabbling” and “immersing” when it comes to your spiritual growth?

“so that all may see your progress.”
Q.  Who in your life has been watching your growth and progress over the past few months?
Q.  Do you want them to see you slide back into your old habits, or do you want them to see you to continue to progress? Why?

“Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching.”
Q. Why is it important to keep a close watch on yourself? What is the danger of making progress and thinking, “I’m good”?
Q.  Being discerning about the spiritual teachers and influences in your life is important.  Do you need to perform an audit or review of what spiritual influences you are listening to right now?

“Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
Q.  What will happen to your wife, family, friends, or loved ones, if you do not persist in your faith and spiritual growth?
Q.  Even though we cannot “save people” in our own strength (only Jesus can save), we can join God in His saving work, by preaching the Gospel and modeling it in our own lives.  How much would it mean to you to see your family, friends, or neighbors come to know Christ through your testimony?

After answering these questions, ask yourself- “Do I have all the motivation I need to persist in practicing all that I have learned?”

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?

Take the challenge, step up to the task, and watch God transform your life, your relationships and your legacy over the next 75 days in God’s Word.
