The Absence Of These Two Things May Be Robbing Your Blessing

“In everything, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Acts 20:35

----------

There are two blessings in this life that bring deep meaning and purpose to a man’s life and career- 1) Working hard, and 2) Giving generously.  Those two things are meant to go together, and are worthy of deeper consideration.

1) The Blessing of Hard Work:  Men are called to work hard, and embrace the opportunity to work as a gift from God.  Work gives men purpose, dignity, confidence, and deep satisfaction.  When men work hard, it releases something like an emotional and spiritual testosterone for the soul… it’s hard to explain what hard work does for a man, but when it is missing, something is noticeably absent from his life.  Hard work generally produces financial benefits that allow a man to provide for his family, enjoy the fruits of his labor, and be more generous.

2) The Blessing of Giving Generously: Jesus said it, Paul repeated it, and countless men have experienced it in their own lives- “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” This is a countercultural paradox of Christianity.  The more you give, the happier, more joyful, and more meaningful your life will become.  Science backs this up, as several independent studies have come to the conclusion that the more you give, the happier you are (or said slightly differently, the happiest people are the most generous people).  Giving generously is a blessing.

The sad reality is that a majority of Christians are missing out on these two blessings.  Men who do not work a full time job are on the rise in the United States as one study shows that the percentage of men who work full time has dropped from 63% to 56% in the past 30 years.  Additionally, research shows that only 21% of Christians give their tithe (10% of their income) to their local church and 25% do not give at all! If these numbers are true, the best case scenario is that only about 20% of all Christian men are receiving the blessings of hard work and generous giving in their lives.

If you want to experience the full blessings of God in your life, reflect on your attitudes and behaviors when it comes to hard work and generous giving.  Are you missing out on the very best blessings that God wants to give you?

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
