Silence, Solitude & Spiritual Depth

To Reduce Headaches, Stop Banging Your Head Against The Wall

“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

Psalm 27:14

----------

When are you at your best?

Do you typically rise to the occasion as a man of God when you are worn out, weary, stretched thin, and stressed?

When are you at your worst?

When you fall into a sinful habit like pornography, gambling, drinking too much, or excessive spending, is it usually when you are prayed up, well rested, at peace spiritually, and feeling close to God?

The correlation between waiting for the Lord (being still, meditating on His Word, communing with Him in prayer, etc) and strength/courage (standing strong in your convictions, doing the right thing not the easy thing, resisting temptation, etc) could not be more obvious.  Yet, we continue to bang our heads against a wall day after day and wonder why we have a headache.

The world needs more strong and courageous men.  Your family needs you to be strong and courageous.  So does your church, your workplace, and your community.  You want to be strong and courageous, and dream of a day when you will be the spiritual leader your family can look up to and that others will follow. But for now, you will keep running at breakneck pace with a far too busy work schedule and family calendar, underdeveloped spiritual habits, no margin, and undisciplined screen time and hope that things get better one day.

“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

What if this became your daily game plan?

What if you started every day waiting for the Lord?  Not just “doing a quiet time” for 5 minutes on the way out the door, but really making yourself still before God and inviting Him (and His strength and courage) into your soul.  Allowing God to fill you and prepare you for whatever the day may bring, and even inviting God to give you even more of Himself in the parts of your day that you are quietly feeling anxious about.

What if you ended your day waiting for the Lord? Not just an exhausted bed time prayer, but a time of reflection and gratitude for the blessings given and the lessons learned that day?  An opportunity to wipe the slate clean, and surrender the results of your daily efforts to His sovereign plans.

If this were your daily game plan, do you think you would see more wins and less losses?  Would you be at your best more often?  Would you be at your worst less often?  What is keeping you from waiting for the Lord right now?

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
