What are the things you will never stop doing? You are committed… come hell or highwater, you are going to do these things no matter what. I know a guy who has run 5 miles a day, every day, for over 4 years. No matter how he feels, what the weather is like, or the strain on his schedule, he is running those 5 miles. You might call these your nonnegotiables. You can negotiate with your boss, your wife, and yourself on a lot of things, but there may be a few (or even just one) things that you refuse to negotiate on.

For the Apostle Paul, praying for the spiritual growth of the people he loved was nonnegotiable. In a harsh prison or shipwrecked shore, Paul would not be deterred from his commitment to prayer. What Paul’s nonnegotiable mindset on prayer revealed was that Paul did not see prayer as a last resort, or a spiritual accessory, but an essential practice that was as necessary as breathing or drinking water. As the old evangelist Leonard Ravenhill once wrote, “Prayer is not a preparation for the battle; it is the battle!”

Have you made prayer a nonnegotiable in your life, marriage, parenting and business? Specifically, are you praying for the spiritual growth of the people you love every single day? A spiritual battle cannot be won with worldly weapons. A spiritual work cannot be accomplished with earthly tools. If you want to see your wife and children thrive spiritually, you must see prayer as a mission critical practice in your daily spiritual disciplines.

Hell and high water are coming… will you be so prayed up that you can stand in the gap for your wife, children, and loved ones when it does?
