Nice Is Making You Dull And Dim

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

When was the last time a friend got in your face and challenged you to be a better man?

How long has it been since a brother called you out on an attitude or behavior in your life that was not glorifying God? Iron sharpening iron is not meant to be pleasant, comfortable, or even… nice.

Nice doesn’t make a man holy.

We live in a world that has coined the expression “microagressions” and values tolerance over truth. Sadly, this worldly definition of “compassion” and “empathy” has made its way into the church and modern Christian masculinity. We are not talking about being “A-Holes for Christ,” but this obsession with avoiding confrontation for the sake of feelings is leaving our blades dull and our lights dim.

If a beloved brother challenges you in a way that cuts you, don’t get all up in your feelings. Instead, ask yourself, “what is it that God is trying to teach me through this confrontation?” Remember this painful Proverb- “Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.” (27:6)

Invite your brothers to challenge you, sharpen you, and when necessary, wound you. You will be better for it.
