Rocky Would Have Had Traumatic Brain Damage

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

Ephesians 6:10–11

----------

Ever wonder what kind of real life medical damage the fictional character of Rocky Balboa would have sustained with the hundreds of direct blows he sustained over the course of the Rocky movie series?  According to chatgpt, “If Rocky were real, he probably would not just have ‘some brain damage.’ He would likely have moderate to severe chronic traumatic brain injury by the end of his fighting career.”

Here is a breakdown of the six Rocky movies and the likely medical repercussions of each fight.

Rocky I: significant acute trauma, likely concussion.
Rocky II: severe cumulative trauma; likely multiple concussions.
Rocky III: additional concussion risk from Clubber Lang, especially first fight.
Rocky IV: catastrophic trauma; medically career-ending.
Rocky V: the brain-damage diagnosis makes sense.
Rocky Balboa: fighting again at that age with that history would be medically reckless.

What is the point in all of this? For as tough and as strong as Rocky Balboa was, the dude never blocked or evaded a single punch for his entire life!

As believers, we need the same “eye of the tiger” conviction and strength to keep getting back up and stepping into the ring day after day.  That strength does not come from within ourselves, but from our connection to God.  But, here is the deal, God does not want to watch you get punched in the face over and over again either! The devil has plenty of schemes in his arsenal that he would love to use to take you down and knock you out.  Putting on the “full armor of God” is your way of learning how to block and evade those punches, and even have some counterpunches ready to throw back at the devil.

In what ways do you need to deepen your source of strength and conviction through God?

Do you keep taking punches spiritually because you haven’t learned to put on the full armor of God?

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
