Courageous Conviction

You Can’t Be A People Pleaser And Serve Christ

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Galatians 1:10

----------

Do you get nervous talking about your faith publicly?

If a group of guys around you are cursing or using inappropriate language around you, do you feel uncomfortable asking them to stop?

Is it difficult for you to speak truth into cultural issues for fear of offending someone?

Would you rather agree with your wife then lead her?

Do you say anything when your kids are listening to music or watching videos that are not glorifying to God?

Will you go against your own values and order alcohol at a restaurant in order to fit in?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, then on some level you are seeking to please man instead of pleasing God… and Paul would say that it is impossible to be a people pleaser AND be a servant of Jesus.  (Note to self- maybe I should rewrite this, soften it up a little bit, so that none of the guys reading this get mad at me.)

If you are going to be a man who is known for courageous conviction, you cannot be dominated by a fear of man.  Being a man is not about punching a hole through someone’s chest, but about standing true to your convictions when your heart is beating through your own chest.

Who is that person, or group of people, that makes you think twice about standing up for Christ, speaking truth in love, following through on your commitments to God, or simply becoming something a little less than your true self?  Bring that relationship before God, and ask God to reveal why that person’s approval is so important to you, and what it is costing you (and the people you love) to continue behaving like a servant of man instead of God?

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?

Take the challenge, step up to the task, and watch God transform your life, your relationships and your legacy over the next 75 days in God’s Word.
