Courageous Conviction

Where Conviction And Courage Come From

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

----------

“Be a man!” “Don’t be a sissy!” “Don’t wuss out on me!”  Maybe those words are helpful for you when you’re in a season of fear or depression.  For many men, however, being yelled at to “Quit being a baby… girl… insert demeaning phrase here is more demoralizing and shame inducing than it is inspirational and motivating.  If you have had a father, older brother, friend, boss, or pastor who tried to bully you into being a “real man,” you may find God’s words to Joshua a little unsettling.  Is God just barking out orders like a drill sergeant, seemingly delighting in our misery?

It is very true that God not only wants you to be strong and courageous… He is commanding it.  God does not want you to be conquered by fear and captive to depression.  God demands that His men be ready, willing, and able to lead the charge into battle, and fight to protect their marriages, families, and churches. Weak, passive, frightened and defeated men can’t get themselves off the floor, let alone into the fight.  God is not into coddling men, or swaddling them in emotional bubble wrap.

The difference between a bully, or drill sergeant and our strong and loving heavenly Father is this- He is with us.  “I will be with you, no matter what, wherever you go.” The promise of God’s unwavering and enduring presence is the very source of a man’s courage and strength.

Courageous conviction is absolutely essential for a man who desires to lead himself, his family, and his community well.  The conviction must come from God’s Word, and the courage must come from God’s presence.  When facing your fears, do not try to “drum up” a man-made confidence based on an inflated sense of self.  Instead, reflect on God’s power, might, wisdom, and strength and remind yourself that God is with you in the battle.

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
