The Hero’s Creed: “My Life For Yours”

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

Romans 12:1

----------

The greatest mark of a hero is a willingness to give his life to save others.  A boy becomes a man when his fantasies of being like Captain America, Thor, or some other super hero are replaced by a fierce conviction that he would die for his wife, children, country, or God. Putting your life on the line, and deciding in your soul that you would take a bullet for the ones you love is the truest form of heroism and manhood at its finest.  If that moment comes, when the gun is pulled, the building is on fire, or the decision becomes clear, “it is my life for theirs,” will you rise up and be that hero?

If you are slowly nodding your head, both counting the cost and believing you would be that kind of man, you are already an IMPACT Player.  It is likely, however, you are reading this in the safety of your own home, with little probability of a violent attacker bursting into your front door.  In short, the type of situation that might require the sacrificial bravery you have committed yourself to seems unlikely and unfamiliar to your every day experience.  While few men are called to give their lives in a dying sacrifice, every man is called to lay down his life in a living sacrifice.

What does a living sacrifice look like for you?  According to this verse, making yourself a living sacrifice begins by presenting your body to God in a way that is both holy and acceptable.  If you are doing anything with your body that is not holy- sexual immorality, drunkenness, overeating, self-harm, drug use, or physical violence toward others, to name a few, you are not living sacrificially, but selfishly (and sinfully).  Those are some of the “big ones” that most Christian men typically steer clear of.

Stop for a second, however, and ask yourself, “What does it mean to present my body in an acceptable way to God?”  Your body is a temple of God’s presence and a vessel for God’s power.  Does your body fully belong to God?  It is one thing to say, “I would die for God, or for my wife and loved ones.” The real question is, will you give yourself as a living sacrifice?

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
