The Lie Men Believe About Their Pornography

"Abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.”

1 Thessalonians 5:22-24

----------

Pornography and masturbation are a major problem in the lives of countless men in our world.  You may be reading this and experiencing shame and guilt over the presence of lust and sexual sin in your life.  In an attempt to lessen the shame and alleviate the guilt of sexual sin, you may have allowed yourself to buy into a lie that many men choose to believe.

What is the lie?

“What I am doing is not hurting anyone.”

The lie could not be any more untrue… or dangerous. Sexual unfaithfulness, addiction and sin doesn’t hurt anyone, it hurts everyone. Here is who sexual sin hurts-

  • Pornography hurts those trapped in the sex industry, including children.
  • Pornography hurts your testimony and witness of what a Christian man should look like.
  • Pornography hurts your wife and children and their ability to trust you and be close to you.
  • Pornography hurts your ability to relate well to yourself, others, and God.
  • Pornography hurts our Savior Jesus Christ, who died for our sins.

At the heart of today’s verse is a direct challenge to the lies we believe.

You are an integrated person- Spirit, Soul, and Body.  You cannot be addicted to pornography AND have a close walk with God.  To be sanctified and blameless before God means giving God every area of your life, and making every area of your life holy unto God.

If this topic convicts you, that’s good… it means that God’s Spirit is not done with you. If the idea of being totally sanctified and blameless before God seems impossible to you, take note of the last verse in today’s study.  “He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.”

Who is calling you? God!
Who is faithful? God!
Who will do it? God!

The breakthrough you desperately need in your battle against sexual sin will not come by your white knuckles, but Christ’s scarred hands.  The Gospel has the power to do what you could never do in your own strength.

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
