Running A Marathon With Your Shoelaces Tied Together

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us.”

Hebrews 12:1

----------

Running a marathon is no joke.  It takes training, preparation, focus, determination, nutrition, and drive to run an entire 26.2 miles.  The very last thing any marathon runner would want to do is try to run a marathon with multiple weights or other encumbrances slowing him down.  Imagine trying to run a marathon with your shoelaces tied together and a 50lb backpack weighing you down.  If given the choice, the very first thing you would do would be to throw off the backpack and untie your shoelaces and begin running with a sense of freedom you have never imagined before.

Take note of this distinction in the verse… not every “encumbrance” is sin.  An encumbrance is any thing that distracts, deters, or slows us down from running the race that God has set before us. Take stock of these potential encumbrances that could be slowing you down as a man, husband, father, or leader.

  • A habit that wastes your best energy.
  • A relationship that clouds your decision making.
  • A comfort that makes sacrifice seem unreasonable.
  • A need for approval that makes you nice instead of brave.
  • A calendar so packed that your soul is too weary to be bold.
  • A phone that keeps your mind fixated on the superficial.
  • An activity that has become an identity.
  • A fear of man that has turned conviction into compromise
  • A bitterness that eats at your gratitude.
  • A financial ambition that leaves you spiritually impoverished.

Notice that the author of Hebrews doesn’t tell us to “do better” or “manage” our encumbrances.  He says, “throw off every encumbrance” that is keeping us from running our very best race.  What encumbrances do you need to “throw off”? Don’t just say, “I need to do better…,” throw it off and leave it on the side of the road behind you!

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
