Losing Everything Helps You Gain Clarity

“O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water.”

Psalm 63:1

----------

There is nothing like having everything taken from you to realize that God is all you really need.  This Psalm was written by King David, not as a young man, with a world of promise in front of him, but as an old man reeling from the deepest bitterness and betrayal one can imagine.  His son Absalom had stolen the hearts of the people, launched a coup, and forced David to flee the city. David left weeping, barefoot, and covered in grief.

The throne, the riches, the honor, title, security, and comforts David had become accustomed to were ripped away by his very own son, who sought to take his life.  David was not merely in a metaphorical “dry and weary land without water,” but a literal wasteland without the very sustenance he needed to live.  In his desperation, this older David was reminded of the songs he had sung in his youth that declared his dependence upon God.

A deep hunger and thirst for God can be difficult to develop when you are surrounded by affluence, comfort, and prestige.  God may take you through a wilderness season to remind you that He is the only thing truly worth pursuing.  A spiritual hunger usually grows when a man is deprived of worldly substitutes.  If you are going through that kind of season right now, do not settle for anything less than the full presence and power of God in your life.

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
