Intentional Leadership

The New Definition Of Greatness

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45

----------

“And so Jesus gave us a new norm of greatness. If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That's a new definition of greatness. By giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.” MLK Jr (The Drum Major Instinct)

It turns out that the new definition of greatness is over 2,000 years old.  A man is called to be the leader of his marriage and family as God has ordained.  He is to be great in the eyes of his wife and children, such that they honor him, respect him, and submit to his leadership in the home.  What kind of man can merit such a revered status in his own house? A man who is great like Jesus.

What does it mean to be a great man like Jesus?  For a man to become great, he must become a selfless and sacrificial servant. Though Jesus was a servant, He never abdicated His authority.  Though Jesus was selfless, He never abandoned His responsibility.  Though Jesus made Himself a sacrifice for the whole world, He never acquiesced to the standards of this world. This is the true test of Christian leadership for a man of God- Learning to become a servant leader, without giving in to the demands of the ones he serves. How are you doing in learning this new definition of greatness?
