What Men Can Learn From An 80’s Anti-Drug PSA

“Imitate me as I imitate Christ.”

1 Corinthians 11:1

----------

In 1987 an Anti-Drug PSA commercial became a cultural flashpoint as it featured a frustrated father questioning his teenage son about some marijuana found in the boy's closet. “Who taught you how to do this stuff?” is the big set up for the commercials most memorable line- “You alright! I learned it by watching you!” The boy confesses his shameful lesson as the fathers shoulders collapse and his head drops in shame.  The commercial concluded with this simple summary by a voice over, “Parents who use drugs have children who use drugs.”

Discipleship is more caught than taught, and parents that teach one thing, and do another are discipling their children to be the same kind of hypocrites as they are.  When seeking to disciple a church in Corinth that was as wild and ornery as they come, Paul made a most audacious command for these unrefined new Christians- “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” That is the essence of discipleship in 6 words.  You don’t need to have a Seminary degree, Bible certificate, or theology training to start making disciples.  You only need to get busy imitating Christ, and then invite your children and other newer believers to imitate you.

Fast forward into the future… you see your son (for example), treating his wife with honor, leading his family in prayer and serving in the church.  He is a wise steward of his finances, and gives generously to the Lord’s work.  You observe that he is quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.  You pull your grown son aside, you look him in the eyes and you ask, “Who taught you how to do this stuff?” You son pauses, and grins with a twinkle in his eye, and replies, “You alright! I learned it by watching you!”

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
