Intentional Leadership

Why People Are Losing Their Minds and Their Morals

“Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, But happy is one who keeps the Law.”

Proverbs 29:18

----------

The modern definition of “vision” may be doing more harm than good.  Often vision is framed along the lines of “if you can dream it, you can do it.” This concept of vision supposes that it is up to us to come up with a vision for our lives, our marriages, families, businesses, organizations, or churches.  However, this is the last thing from the true definition of vision offered in Proverbs.  Look at how Proverbs 29:18 is translated in the NIV- “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”

The true meaning of vision is “divine revelation.”

Q.) What is the greatest and most reliable source of divine revelation in our world?

A.) The Bible.

God’s Word is the “vision” that your life, family and organization need.  Where there is no Biblical guidance and direction, the people lose their minds and their morals. It isn’t hard to find countless examples of what happens when Biblical truth and standards of right and wrong are removed from a house, church, or nation.

Being a leader doesn’t mean dreaming up some grand vision for all that you and your people can do, be, or accomplish.  A Christian leader has already received a vision, a divine revelation from God in His Word, and it is his job to keep his people as submitted to God’s Word as possible.  God’s law is not restraining God’s people from freedom, but from self destruction.  This is why Solomon tells us that the one who keeps God’s law and heeds wisdom’s instruction is happy and blessed.

A happy and blessed life, family, and organization is a vision worth pursuing!

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
