Another One Bites The Dust

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!”

 Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

---------

Several years ago I was running in a family friendly 5K Turkey trot.  Just ahead of me was a group of 4 young, attractive, Lululemon clad ladies running together.  To my shock, one of the ladies grew faint, stumbled, passed out and fell to the ground. As startled as I was by the unconscious woman on the ground in front of me, what I will never forget is watching her “friends” roll their eyes, shake their heads, and keep on running!  As I was tending to this young lady I heard one of the ladies leaving her behind saying, “Ugh, she does this all the time!”

If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” (1 Corinthians 10:12). Some men are overly confident they will never fall.  “I’m good,” they tell themselves.  “I’m not like other guys who are vulnerable to those kinds of temptations,” they think confidently.  Then, as if the sidewalk reaches up and grabs them, they fall flat on their faces.

Another one bites the dust.

The question isn’t “Will I fall?”, but “Who will be around me to pick me up when I do fall?” The Bible cannot be any more clear on this fundamental truth- “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23.  Are you prepared for the day when you stumble and fall flat on your face spiritually? Do you have brothers around you who are going to be there to pick you up, dust you off, and get you back in the race?

According to this passage in Ecclesiastes, a man who does not have friends who will be there to pick him up when he falls is to be pitied.  Every man needs a band of brothers. If you fall, will your friends stop and pick you up, or look back annoyed while they leave you behind?

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
