WHY “HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE” IS A MISERABLE MOTTO

In 1903, the closing line of the Sunderland Daily Echo & Shipping Gazette included the phrase, “A happy wife, a happy life.” Over 120 years later and “Happy Wife, Happy Life” has become one of the most repeated marriage tropes in modern culture. The only problem is that it is killing marriages and making everyone miserable in the process.

When a wife’s happiness (or positive emotional state) becomes the functional center of a marriage rather than devotion to Christ, it makes a wife’s emotions an idol, and a husband an idol worshipper. If a husband attempts to keep his wife pleased at all costs, it will ultimately cost him his dignity, her respect, and God’s blessings.

Instead of leading, a husband will avoid, placate, and step aside to dodge conflict and please his wife instead of following Jesus. In the first few years of marriage, a wife may enjoy this arrangement of power, but as her responsibilities pile up, and her husband checks out, she will come to despise his passive “nice guy” routine. There is nothing wrong with a happy wife, but making her happiness the center of your life and marriage will ultimately make you a miserable man.

How do you know if you have put an unhealthy amount of emphasis on keeping your wife happy?

The Swordsman: Wielding the Word — Part 1: Husbands is a new IMPACT Cohort study for men who desire to be great husbands who are skillfully equipped with the Word of God.  We call these men who know how to rightly handle Scripture in their marriage, family, and work lives “Swordsmen.”

The difference between a man with a sword and a swordsman comes down to training and expertise. The Word of God is known as “the sword of the Spirit” and “a double-edged sword,” yet most men have not learned to wield God’s Word like an expert swordsman. In this IMPACT Players Cohort study, men will be trained with the 7 verses that every husband must learn to wield effectively in their marriage.
