“Husbands, in the same way, treat

your wives as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs

of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be

hindered.”

1 Peter 3:7 (BSB)

If you want to illicit the rage of a modern feminist, attempt to even suggest that a woman should be considered a “delicate vessel” to be treated with care.  Before we begin apologizing for the Word of God,  let’s try to better understand the Biblical meaning of the expression - “delicate vessel” when describing our wives.

The first step is understanding the word “vessel” as used in Scripture. Men and women were made distinctly unique with specific roles and responsibilities, yet both were created in God’s image. Humans are by God’s design, embodied souls, which means they are eternal souls integrated into earthly bodies. Our bodies of matter to God, but the most valuable part of us is our soul.

2 Corinthians 4:7 says, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves.” In Romans 9:23 Paul says that every Christian chosen by God is a “vessel of mercy” and that every vessel is to be committed to “sanctification and honor” before God (1 Thessalonians 4:4).

The point is this - the inward soul/spirit of each man or woman is equally valuable, beautiful, and worthy of honor, wonder, and respect. The vessel, that is a man’s body, or a woman’s body is different, just as God created it to be. It is not demeaning to say that a woman’s body is different than a man’s, and that they should be treated with greater care, protection, and tenderness.

In writing these words, Peter was not reinforcing a masculine agenda but instead issuing a counter-cultural mandate that would elevate the status of women and promote their dignity and worth within the church. Challenging prevailing societal norms and calling for a radical expression of love and respect within the Christian household, this instruction was revolutionary, not regressive. For 2,000+ years, 1 Peter 3:7 has been a gift to women and marriage, and when understood correctly, will be a gift to your marriage as well.

The Swordsman: Wielding the Word — Part 1: Husbands is a new IMPACT Cohort study for men who desire to be great husbands who are skillfully equipped with the Word of God.  We call these men who know how to rightly handle Scripture in their marriage, family, and work lives “Swordsmen.”

The difference between a man with a sword and a swordsman comes down to training and expertise. The Word of God is known as “the sword of the Spirit” and “a double-edged sword,” yet most men have not learned to wield God’s Word like an expert swordsman. In this IMPACT Players Cohort study, men will be trained with the 7 verses that every husband must learn to wield effectively in their marriage.
