Sacrificial Love

What To Do If Your Marriage Feels Completely One-Sided

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her…” Ephesians 5:25

----------

“But what about her?”

Does your marriage feel one-sided right now? You are doing everything, giving everything, and getting nothing in return. It hardly seems fair that you are making all of the sacrifices, and she seems as cold as stone.

It used to be different.  In fact, there was a time when she was very affectionate and intimacy came easily.  Truth be told, you took your marriage and your bride for granted.  When she told you that she didn’t want this (or you) anymore, it was a harsh wake up call.  You looked in the mirror and you started making changes, but now it seems like you are the one doing all the work and still can’t seem to do anything right.

When Jesus died on the cross, He was dying for His Bride, the Church.  The Church is every sinner-turned-saint who has been saved by the good news message of Christ.  If you are a Christian, then you are a part of the Church, or “the Bride”, for whom Christ died. At the moment when Christ was crucified, He was completely abandoned, betrayed, and even scorned by the very ones He loved so much to sacrifice His life for.

“Love your wives, just as Christ…” Those words “just as” set a standard for loving our wives that is no less than what Jesus endured over 2,000 years ago.  When Christ hung on the cross, He never once looked at God and pointed at His Bride and muttered, “But what about her?” What the Bride did in that moment had been entirely removed from Jesus’ control.  He could only do one thing- Obey God’s will for His life.

If your marriage feels one-sided, you are in company with Christ.  It will do you no good to look to God and point at your bride and say, “But what about her?”  You have only one responsibility- Obey God’s will for your life. Love her sacrificially, like Jesus, for as long as it takes.

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
