What Does It Mean To Be A Man?

What God Requires Of You As A Man

"He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Micah 6:8

-----------

Did you know that God has put requirements on your life?  If you are to be a good man and a man of God, there are 3 things that you must do:

  1. Act Justly: A just man is not perfect, but he is right with God and right with those around him.  When you sin against God or others, do you ask for forgiveness and seek to reconcile and restore the relationship?  When others sin against you, do you forgive them?  Are you seeking to make the broken and unjust things in your life, family, and community right?
  2. Love Mercy A merciful man has the strength to resist vengeance and giving people what they “deserve.” If you are an “eye for an eye” kinda guy, then you are not meeting the requirement of loving mercy.  A man of God has come to understand that God’s mercy in his own life is so much greater than any mercy that he could offer to others that the opportunity to show mercy is not something he despises, but truly cherishes.
  3. Walk Humbly In a world that values prestige and power, the man who walks humbly is a counter-cultural force to be reckoned with. Not boasting, not putting yourself at the front of the line, and not making yourself the hero of your own story will surprisingly set you apart from every other man who is trying to get his piece of the pie.

None of these requirements are even remotely possible unless you underline the last 3 words of Micah 6:8.  Are you “with your God?” Not, is God with you (He always is), but are you with God?  Your relationship with God will empower you to fulfill your requirements for God.

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
