Sacrificial Love

Your Wife Is Sick And Tired Of Hearing “I’m Sorry”

“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

1 John 3:18

----------

“I’m tired of hearing, ‘I’m sorry’! I want to see you change!”

Many marriages find themselves in a helpless rut.  The husband has an unwelcome behavior, unruly tongue, or unbecoming attitude that keeps coming up over and over and over again in his marriage.  His wife has confronted him about it countless times, and time and time again, he has said, “I’m sorry” only to find himself in the same situation repeatedly.

The wife interprets this repeated offense as a flagrant foul, an intentional act of harm perpetrated against her, and becomes deeply wounded, relationally despondent, or emotionally out of control. Her pain amplifies the problem, deepens the divide, and fuels the anger that both husband and wife feel for one another. This very common cycle creates a sense of futility that often produces hopelessness in a marriage.

Love requires much more than empty words and hollow apologies, but both actions and truth.

The problem with most men, and marriages, is we want everything to change without changing anything.  Change happens when change happens.  In order to change things in your marriage or family life, consider these two important elements-

1) Loving Truth:  Until you are able to address what the problem is and why it is a problem, you can never fix it.  You have to be honest with yourself, with God, and with your wife about the sins and negative habits that are plaguing your relationship.

2) Loving Action: Life changes require life changes. You can’t just talk about “doing better.” You must change the actions, and the circumstances that produce these actions so that you can begin to experience victory.

Here is another way to think about it- If your life depended on it, what would you change in order to never make that same mistake again?  Or, if there were a 10 million dollar reward for never falling into that sin or struggle again, what changes would you make?

Be honest… Do you know what you need to do?

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?

Take the challenge, step up to the task, and watch God transform your life, your relationships and your legacy over the next 75 days in God’s Word.
