The Self Care Movement Has Gotten Out Of Hand

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

The self care movement has gotten out of hand. The most repeated analogy in self care over the past decade has been that of the oxygen mask in an airplane. You’ve heard it, “Just like they tell you to put on your own oxygen mask in a plane emergency before helping others, so too, you need to take care of yourself before helping those around you.”

Here is the problem; we have become obsessed with caring for ourselves. Self care has become a multi-billion dollar industry that is primarily fueled by selfish ambition, empty pride, and self-interested people who have deluded themselves into believing that their number one priority should be to ensure their own happiness and well-being.

Don’t buy into the lie of “self care.” You are never going to find Paul getting expensive massages so that he can better minister to the Philippians. Peter never once told a new believer, “I would like to disciple you, but I really need to focus on me right now.” James didn’t practice “retail therapy” so he would be better able to care for orphans and widows.

None of the early disciples would have ever had the nerve to talk about “self care” when they heard their Master say plainly, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23. Jesus never once talked about self care, but He regularly spoke of self sacrifice.

Here is the ruse- In order to care for others, you must first care for yourself.
Here is the reality- By caring for others, you will be blessed.

“Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25. Instead of focusing on your own “self care” today, instead look for opportunities to refresh others and see what God does in your own soul.
