Convenient Friendships Can Be Thrown Away Easily

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

Proverbs 17:17

----------

In the world of marketing, one of the greatest selling points a product can emphasize is its convenience.  People will gladly pay more money for a product that promises convenience for the purchaser.  One of the ways that convenience has overtaken our culture is through the rise of disposable products. Disposable diapers, tissues, plates, cutlery and other items have conditioned us to discard that which is dirty and not worth the trouble of cleaning and restoring.

Friendships can feel that way. Convenient friendships are fun and easy with lots of laughs and good times.  The problem with convenient friendships is they can be as disposable as a used Kleenex.  A buddy to play golf with, watch the game with, even go to church or hang out as couples can be a great source of enjoyment, but when things get inconvenient, will they stay in the mess with you, or toss you out like a paper plate at a picnic?

True friendship is not marked by convenience, but by covenant.  Convenient friendships are easily formed and quickly disposed of.  A covenant friendship is more rare, taking time and sacrifice to forge in hardship.  True friendship is a commitment to become “brothers born for adversity.” Choosing to stay, work through the mess, walk through the darkness, and carry one another's burdens is awfully inconvenient. Covenant friendship messes up our schedules, costs us our comforts, invades our thoughts, and stirs up our emotions in ways we would rather avoid than endure.

Evaluate your friendships… Are they convenient and disposable or covenantal and sacrificial?

What kind of friend are you?

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
