Faithful Over Famous: Becoming A Man Of Impact

“And the things that you have heard me say among many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others as well.”

2 Timothy 2:2

----------

Growing up, did you have posters of influential people on your bedroom walls? Perhaps it was an athlete (Michael Jordan, Andre Agassi, Bo Jackson, etc) or a musician/band (MC Hammer, Nirvana, etc), or even a movie star (Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, etc).  These “stars” had a platform, and their platform gave them influence, and that influence made them seem very important.  As a result, many men of previous generations fantasized about being pro athletes, famous musicians, and movie stars.

Today, some studies report that 57% of all Gen Z’ers want to be “Influencers” when they get older.  Nearly everyone is looking for something to make their lives feel important. On one level, that innate desire is pride, puffing up a person’s ego; but on another level, it is a deep longing for purpose and significance.  You were meant for something more than simply punching a time card, making money, or living a good life for 70 years before you die.

Your life was meant to have an impact and a legacy.

The world is working double time to convince you that the key to making an impact with your life is by building your platform and your brand.  Paul would argue otherwise… the greatest impact is made through dedicating your life to multiplying disciples. Look at that verse again, and ask yourself, who are the “faithful men” Timothy invested in and trained to disciple others?  We don’t know who those anonymous men of God are, but if it were not for them, none of us would be believers today.

The Gospel has not spread around the world to millions upon millions of people over 2,000 years because of “famous men” who were marked by celebrity.  No, it has multiplied across geographical and generational lines through the multiplying efforts of “faithful men” who were marked by Christ.  Are you a faithful man?  How are you making disciples who make disciples with your life?  What steps could you take to be more intentional about doing the most important thing you could do with your life?

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
