“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” Proverbs 31:28 (ESV)

Some women LOVE Proverbs 31... others feel overwhelmed by it. Many Christian men point to Proverbs 31 as a way of affirming the role that their wives play in their marriage and family, yet few ever consider what it means to be a Proverbs 31 man.

Foundationally, Proverbs 31 is not a chapter for wives, but for husbands. Written by an obscure King from a neighboring nation, it describes a man (King Lemuel) who was blessed with a wise mother and a wonderful wife. The Proverb is his attempt to honor his mother and celebrate his wife.

The more you rise up to become who God has called you to be, the more your family will be blessed also. The more you can create a home that blesses your wife, the more she will become a blessing to you.

6 Ways Godly Husbands Should Rise Up

Rise up to your Godly Upbringing (Proverbs 31:1-2)

If you were blessed enough to be raised by Godly parents, you have been given a tremendous blessing. Have you risen to the standards set by your parents or sunk into worldly ways? You don't have to stand in your parents shadows, but you can climb on their shoulders. Rise up and take it!

Rise Up with Sexual Purity (Proverbs 31:3)

A King does not give his strength to lust or relationships with other women. Do not let lust, pornography, or an unhealthy relationship steal your spiritual authority and integrity.

Rise Up with Self Control (Proverbs 31:4-7)

It is not for Kings to be ruled by alcohol or other substances. King's have too much responsibility to be irresponsible. If alcohol is a part of your life, do an honest evaluation to determine what kind of control it has on you.

Rise Up with Conviction (Proverbs 31:8-9)

A good King stands up for the weak, defends the defenseless, and cannot be bought or compromised. In your home, guard the spiritual and emotional wellbeing of your children and wife well. Outside of your home, be an advocate for the vulnerable in your community.

Rise Up with Trust (Proverbs 31:11)

A godly husband is both trustworthy and trusting of his wife. There is no place for jealousy or betrayal in your marriage. Manipulation, betrayal, and broken trust can undermine a lot of good done in a marriage.

Rise Up as a Leader (Proverbs 31:23)

A godly husband has a strong reputation and has earned the respect of others as a leader in the community. Strive to be a man who gives back more than he takes, who serves others, and continues to lead with humility and dedication, even when it is difficult.
