The Mission of a Man

“Every Man For Himself” Is Satan’s Mission For Your Life

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19–20

----------

Are you familiar with the second half of the expression- “Every man for himself”

Most know that this phrase is synonymous with cowardice, but the full expression is insightful- “every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost.” Originating in the 1600’s, this idiom paints the picture of men abandoning their call to protect and preserve, leaving those under their care to become easy prey for Satan’s attacks.

In an “every man for himself” culture, the weak, the least, the lost, and the left behind are the ones who suffer the most.  When men have no mission, purpose, or goal greater than themselves to pursue, an “every man for himself” mindset will become his guide, and people will die because of it.

The great commission is the exact opposite of “every man for himself.” It is Christ’s commanded mission to be proactive, selfless, sacrificial, and brave for the sake of the souls who will die and go to hell if they do not hear the good news.  “Every man for himself” says, “stay safe, risk nothing, invest in your own comfort, and build your own kingdom.”  The great commission says, “leave the 99 to go after the 1, give more than you can bear, risk everything, and build God’s kingdom.

If a photographer were to take 5 to 7 snapshots that represent your life, what story would those pictures tell?  Would they represent a man who has settled for the comfort and safety of “every man for himself” or the purpose and danger of the great commission?  The man of God gives his best every day to make sure that the devil can’t take anyone who is lagging, lacking, or losing in his life.

Who in your life do you need to go after?

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
