The Mandate Of A Man

Where Is The Man You Once Knew?

“Then the LORD God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’”

Genesis 3:9

----------

Adam was hiding. Naked and afraid. Nothing makes a man feel more exposed than to be both totally exposed and covered in shame and guilt at the same time. Adam had been passive when his wife was tempted to sin, and instead of speaking up and standing strong, he shriveled and fell into sin.  Now God had come for their daily time together and Adam was nowhere to be found.

This simple question that God asked the first man, He now asks you… “Where are you?”

  • Where is the man who once dreamed dreams and believed big things were possible in his life?
  • Where is the man who once pursued and romanced his wife like a cherished prize?
  • Where is the man who once declared that his life fully belonged to God?
  • Where is the man who put in the work to be at his best physically for himself, his wife, and his family?
  • Where is the man who once told his newborn child that he would give his life to protect him/her and raise them in the Lord?

Where is that man? When you look in the mirror, do you see a man in hiding? Hiding behind work, hobbies, distractions, and busyness? It’s time to step out from your shame, depression, hopelessness, or addiction and let God’s work of accountability complete its mission.

Accountability is hard, but it is an expression of love.  When God held Adam accountable, He didn’t pull any punches.  Adam had to own the consequences of his sin. Yet, God’s final work in the accountability process was to restore Adam, and to clothe him so that Adam could be the man, the husband, and father that God had designed for him to be.

Where are you? Step out of the shadows and into the light and let God’s accountability complete its work within you.

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
