Is God A Magic Genie Or An Empty Promise?

“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

John 15:7

“Ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

Is God a genie in a magic lamp?

Have you ever played the game, “If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?” (And no, you cannot wish for more wishes)! The dream of getting whatever you wish for has become a nightmare for those who seem to have had all of their dreams come true, only to find their lives mired in pain, heartbreak, disillusionment and self-destruction.

Or, perhaps you have tried out this verse for yourself, and have found the results to be disappointing. You have wished (prayed) for a wife, children, a dream career, a healthy body, or some other “reasonable” request for years, and God seems to be coming up empty on His promises. You’re not asking for a billion dollars, but a little help with the mortgage doesn’t seem like too much to ask.

So which is it? Is God a cosmic vending machine who will give you whatever you ask for, as long as you push the right buttons? Or, is God a cruel father, who holds out a promise of blessing, only to snatch it away whenever you reach for it? Perhaps this verse from Psalm 37:4 might bring some clarity,

“Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

Just because a child desires to become a pirate does not mean his father should saw off his hand, poke out his eye, and buy him a parrot. Childish and foolish desires are not fulfilled by a loving father. However, when a child learns to love what the father loves, and what is good and right and pleasing and true, the father delights in giving his children what their heart desires.

When your desires become the Lord’s delights, you can ask whatever you wish, because your wishes are God’s commands.

How does a man learn to delight himself in the Lord? Abiding in His Word. Abiding in Christ. Filling himself completely with the things that bring God pleasure, and wanting nothing of the things that bring God displeasure.

Ask whatever you wish…
