The Power of God's Word

Am I Wasting My Time Reading Business And Leadership Books?

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16–17

----------

“You can become a fully equipped and complete man of God by reading one book.”

That is one heck of a sales pitch. If you have committed yourself to some summer reading, perhaps focused on personal growth, leadership, spiritual maturity, or the solution to a particular challenge, you should at least stop and consider, “Am I wasting my time reading anything else but God’s Word?”

If that idea offends, or upsets you, perhaps you should allow yourself to wrestle with those emotions for a few minutes. If the Bible is what it says it is, then it belongs on a book shelf all by itself.  The Bible, unlike any other book ever written, is “God-breathed.” That is to say, the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God, written by men but given to us by God with perfect wisdom, truth, and authority.  The Scriptures are not merely ancient texts with helpful stories and principles for living, but a living and active document filled with Holy Spirit power to transform lives, churches, and nations.  Name one other book on your bookshelf that even begins to make such a claim.

There are men who will gobble up leadership, business and self-improvement books like a kid filling up on breadsticks at the Olive Garden, but seem to have little appetite for the Word of God.

According to Patrick Morley in the book Man Alive, most men “don’t know the Scriptures and therefore don’t know the power of God. Their capabilities don’t equal their intentions. Digging into the Word of God is easily the number one factor that differentiates men who have tapped into God’s power.” The number one factor that separates an ill-equipped, incomplete man from a fully-equipped, complete man is transformational time in God’s Word.  A man who reads it, studies it, memorizes it, speaks of it, applies it, and finds strength in God’s Word every day will have all the instruction, conviction, correction, and training for righteousness he needs to face every opportunity and challenge before him, complete and fully equipped.

Are we burning our books now? Does this mean we stop reading anything else but the Bible? No.  But what if your hunger for God’s Word was 100 times stronger than any other kind of book on the market?  What would change?

Reflection: (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?

Take the challenge, step up to the task, and watch God transform your life, your relationships and your legacy over the next 75 days in God’s Word.
