It Starts With Why… But The Deeper Why Matters Most

“I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”

John 15:11

What do you want? I mean, what do you really want? Stop for a minute and think about it.

Yes, you want a promotion, a pay raise, or a private office… But what do you really want?

You want to find a woman, get married, start a family, and create a home… But what do you really want?

You want to get in better shape, be fit and strong, and live a long and healthy life… But what do you really want?

This is not a trick question, but a deep question. It requires some digging, and you will likely not get to the bottom of this pursuit in the few minutes it takes to read this devotional.

What if you were to write down the hopes, goals, and dreams you have for your life and then for each one of those aspirations, you were to write down why you want them? What would that reflection reveal to you and about you?

Now, what if you were to dig even deeper than that and ask yourself, “Why do I want those ‘Why’s’ in my life?” This exercise may be confusing, so let me offer an example-

Goal: “I want to write a best selling book to help men become the men God created them to be.”
Top Level Why: “I want to impact men’s lives and make a difference.”
Deeper Why: “I want my life to matter for eternity.”

Understanding the deeper why is critical, because only Jesus can answer the deeper why’s in our lives. After a youth spent on pursuing pleasures and accomplishment, St. Augustine came to the end of himself and found true life in Jesus Christ. Augustine famously wrote, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you."

Overflowing joy can only flow from the well of a heart that has dug deeper than the superficial pursuits of this world. Unstoppable, unlimited joy is found when a man digs deeper into his relationship with Jesus than he ever thought possible. Beneath the trappings, the busyness, the pain, the motivations, the broken dreams, and shattered hopes there is a well of joy which connects a man’s deepest why’s to the living water. Keep digging!
