One Man’s Treasure Is Another Man’s Trash

“I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them mere rubbish, so that I may gain Christ”

We are a people obsessed with things. Things you can buy. Things you can eat. Things you can do. Things you can wear. Things you can accomplish. Things you can see. Things you can build. Things you can experience. There are so many things that can capture our attention, affection, and aspirations in this life.

Paul had many things he could point to as evidence that he was someone important, meaningful, and worthy of love. He had birthright, ethnicity, citizenship, education, titles, degrees, accomplishments, wealth, fame, and standing… all the things a man could ever ask for in this life. Yet, when describing that old version of Paul, the word “wretch” came to mind (see Romans 7:24). All his things… and yet no thing could give him what he most needed.

There are a lot of things that things can do for you, but no thing can fill your heart with love. No thing can remove the guilt and shame of your sins. No thing can make your life have any more value, worth, meaning or purpose than it had before you acquired it. When you consider how futile and meaningless things are in the parts of your life that matter most, you can begin to understand why Paul concluded that those things are but “mere rubbish” in the grander view.

What we most deeply need is not more things, but a person. Not just any person, but THE Person. The Person that created you and all the things that exist in our thing-obsessed world. Jesus Christ is that Person. Knowing Jesus is of such infinitely greater value than owning things that Paul gladly “suffered the loss of all things” in order that he might “gain Jesus Christ.” Heed the words of Solomon who wrote, “Everything is meaningless.” (Ecclesiastes 1:2).

You were not meant to live for things. Things are not bad. Jesus knows you need things, but don’t let your desire for things become your main thing.

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
