Get Off The Hamster Wheel And Start Living

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

John 15:5

Have you ever wondered why captive hamsters run on hamster wheels? The existence of the hamster wheel is approximately 100 years old, and was created by those who wanted to keep hamsters in captivity as pets.

In the wild, a hamster is a nocturnal animal that travels up to 5 miles every night burrowing, foraging for food, seeking a mate, and building a nest. Those instinctual behaviors are born within every hamster, and the hamster wheel is a way to placate those instincts so that the hamster can remain domesticated. A hamster runs hard every night, but he goes nowhere and accomplishes nothing for all his efforts.

The world has created a hamster wheel for men that keeps them running hard, working long hours and staying busy, yet going nowhere and accomplishing nothing of significant value. Men spend their days running on a treadmill, scrolling on a phone, grinding through a carousel of emails, meetings, and to do lists, only to watch a few shows, collapse in their beds and repeat it all the next morning. They wonder if their lives are moving the needle, bringing the ball down the field, or adding up for anything other than a trivial kingdom filled with trinkets and toys.

When Jesus said to His disciples, “apart from Me you can do nothing,” He was speaking of this hamster wheel-esque relentless futility that plagues the lives of countless men. It is not that the man (or hamster) is doing “nothing” in the literal sense of the word. He is existing, eating, drinking, moving and breathing, oftentimes with great energy and dedication. The word “nothing” must be understood in comparison to Jesus’ words, “bearing fruit.” Jesus further clarifies this fruit in v. 16, saying, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will remain…”

The life you were chosen for, that Jesus appointed you to fulfill in this world is a fruitful life. A life marked by eternal significance and forever impact is impossible to achieve apart from a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. This deep relationship with Christ is the secret key, and the only way to get off the hamster wheel, out of the cage, and into the world of danger, purpose, meaning, and true living that you were created for.
