Would you rather have a spotlight, or be a lighthouse?

The allure of fame, notoriety, position, and acclaim are relentlessly pushed as the key to fulfillment, significance, meaning, and joy. If you scratch, claw, and build your brand long enough, perhaps you will get your 15 minutes of fame, and the world will know your name. This is the pursuit of the spotlight.

When you think about a spotlight on a stage, it has a clearly defined purpose- to draw all eyes to the one standing in the center of the light. To stand in the spotlight means to leave everyone else in the dark. The spotlight turns friends into fans and family into spectators. The spotlight separates the star of the show, but is removed from everyone else. Becoming a “star” is certainly impressive, but spotlight seeking is an obstacle to real intimacy.

A lighthouse has a very different purpose and impact. The lighthouse strategically shines its light so that weary, lost, and shipwrecked wayfarers can safely navigate home. The entire intent of a lighthouse is to rescue and guide others to safety. Those that were once far off draw near and those who were once lost are found. From a distance, people can’t even see the lighthouse, only the light… and that is the way it is meant to be.

What kind of life are you living? Are you trying to draw the eyes of those around you onto yourself, leaving others in the dark? Deep down, do you desire fans or friends? Spectators or family? Are you seeking to impress the crowds or experience intimacy with the few? Or, is your life strategically focused in a way that brings light to others in their darkness? Is your life giving the weary and the lost around you a light that will bring them home to God’s shores of grace? Do you wake up every day thinking about how you can help those who are far off draw near to God? What good is your light accomplishing?
