For Christian fathers, one of the scariest scriptures in the Bible can be found in Judges 2. Joshua had led God’s people into the promised land and boldly declared his allegiance to God- “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15). Judges 2 tells us that all the people served the Lord for all the days of Joshua and the elders who outlived him (Judges 2:7). Yet, after Joshua and the other leaders of his generation passed, things went sideways very quickly.

“And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals. And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers…” (Judges 2:10b-12a).

One generation was all it took for the nation of Israel to collapse into a wicked and rebellious country filled with evil and idolatry. Joshua’s generation had succeeded in taking the promised land and building a God-honoring nation, but had failed in passing on their faith, values, and convictions to their children and grandchildren. If we are not careful, we will let the same thing happen in our own lives, families, and country.

While there are many necessary ingredients for ensuring that our children and grandchildren carry the mantle of faith for future generations, King David mentions two important ingredients in Psalm 154:4.

Commend God’s Works To The Next Generation: A Father should regularly be telling his children about the ways that God is working in his life (personally), in their families, and in the world around them. Our faith is not a dead religion focused on adhering to certain rules and clinging to certain beliefs. Faith in Christ is an active and alive relationship with God, and as we see and experience God’s faithfulness in our lives, we should be quick to tell the next generation what God has done (and is doing).
Proclaim God’s Mighty Acts: Godly men should have no trouble bragging on God and His mighty acts. The next generation is looking for a faith in God that will inspire them to believe big dreams and pursue noble goals. If our children see a faith in us that requires no courage, no faith, no significance, and no impact, it will do little to inspire them to run hard after God themselves.
